Big Cypress Basin and Everglades National Park (mainland Portion)

چکیده
Subregion 6 comprises the Big Cypress watershed north to the Caloosahatchee River watershed and includes the BCNP, Panther NWR, and Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. Subregion 7 consists of the nonmarine southern Everglades and is coincident with the freshwater and terrestrial portions of ENP and the adjacent authorized East Everglades acquisition lands (Figure 1). Discussion of these two subregions is combined in a single chapter because of their evident ecological connections and similar scientific information needs and restoration objectives. In fact, many of the information needs and objectives apply as well to all hydrologically connected areas in South Florida. Thus, many of the pressing science needs described for Subregions 6 and 7 apply also to Subregion 5 (WCAs).

Vegetation Modeling, Analysis and Visualization in U.s. National Parks
Researchers at the Center for Remote Sensing and Mapping Science (CRMS) at The University of Georgia have worked with the U.S. Department of Interior National Park Service (NPS) over the past decade to create detailed vegetation databases for several National Parks and Historic Sites in the southeastern United States. The sizes of the parks under investigation vary from Everglades National Park...
متن کاملVariation of total mercury concentrations in pig frogs (Rana grylio) across the Florida Everglades, USA.
The Pig Frog (Rana grylio) is an aquatic frog that is an abundant component of the Everglades ecosystem. South Floridians recreationally and commercially hunt pig frogs in marshes throughout Water Conservation Areas (WCA) and Big Cypress National Preserve (BCNP) in South Florida. Most of these areas are under fish consumption advisories because of high levels of methylmercury present in game fi...
متن کاملMarl Prairie Vegetation Response to 20 Century Hydrologic Change
We conducted geochronologic and pollen analyses from sediment cores collected in solution holes within marl prairies of Big Cypress National Preserve to reconstruct vegetation patterns of the last few centuries and evaluate the stability and longevity of marl prairies within the greater Everglades ecosystem. Based on radiocarbon dating and pollen biostratigraphy, these cores contain sediments d...
متن کاملThe Seminole Indians of Florida: morphology and serology.
The Seminole Indians of Florida were studied on thek three reservations for blood types, red cell enzymes, serum proteins, physical measurements, and relationships. Both serologic and morphologic factors suggest their close similarity to other Indians and small amount of admixture. The Florida Seminoles are similar to Cherokee “full-bloods” in their absence of Rho and their incidence of 0 and M...
متن کاملBig Cypress fox squirrel (Sciurus niger avicennia) ecology and habitat use in a cypress dome swamp-pine forest mosaic
Forested wetlands are in decline, as are many species that are obligate residents. Big Cypress fox squirrels (BCFS; Sciurus niger avicennia) are a threatened endemic to wet pine and cypress forests in southwestern Florida. The region is characterized by development resulting in habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, and hydrological change that influence the quality of these wet forests. Through ...
